Chapter Eighty-Two: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Last Voyage (1991)
Chapter Eighty-Two: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Last Voyage (1991)

(Final Shot Of The Movie)

One thing was clear going into the production of the next pirate film. It was going to be the final one. Why or where the choice came from is unknown and Disney has never openly talked about it, but no other movie in the franchise would debut apart from a TV show that followed the premise of an anthology series. The main rumour behind the ending of the franchise was the studio’s desire to focus on solo stories instead of big franchises. If this was the correct choice Whether it is not something we can judge, what we can do is look at the final film.

It was decided pretty early on that the film was to go big on its final entry, though this was heavily impacted by the shift in cinema. The film was going to debut in an era of big action movies. The drive behind the film was to go big or go home. To this end, the aptly named Last Voyage was a pirate movie with the biggest budget of them all. John McTiernan, known for directing the science fiction action film Predator was brought on board the project. Some have questioned the choice of director, but his ability to direct action pictures was taken into account and thus he gained the role. Joining him were writers Stirling Silliphant and Gale Anne Hurd. The question of who was to score the film was the one that lasted the longest. Names such as James Horner, Danny Elfman and Rachel Portman were thrown around but, in the end, the studio settled on John Willams of Star Wars fame to produce the music for the film.

The story follows Captain William Blackthorn (played by Dustin Hoffman), a seasoned and weathered pirate, who embarks on a perilous quest for redemption and closure. Determined to uncover a long-lost treasure and lay old ghosts to rest, Blackthorn assembles a motley crew of old friends, youthful rogues, and spirited allies to navigate treacherous waters. Their journey weaves through uncharted territories and mysterious islands, unveiling forgotten legends and age-old curses. As they confront rival pirate crews, mythical creatures, and the dangers of the unpredictable sea, the crew's bond is tested. Along the way, they encounter unexpected allies and formidable foes, including a legendary, long-feared pirate thought to be lost to history.

The film was released in July of 1991 for the summer blockbuster season. Disney put major effort into marketing the film using the fact it was the final pirate film in that marketing. The efforts paid off as the high-budget and highly explosive pirate movie beat out the other films in the franchise. Yet even though the film is the highest-earning pirate film, it is considered weaker in some respects in comparison to the story and character-focused early films. The film is often ranked in the middle when it comes to ranking the films, but nevertheless, the franchise that began in the 1950s did indeed go out with a bang instead of a whimper, which is exactly what the studio wanted.

Chapter Eighty-Three: Big Hero 6 (1991)
Chapter Eighty-Three: Big Hero 6 (1991)
1022870-disneys-big-hero-6-gets-anime-short-tekken.png

(Concept Art For Baymax)
By 1991, Superhero films had established themselves in Hollywood. They could work, they could be successful and, though recent superhero films had stagnated, it was still a popular genre. Disney, up till this point, had no interest in superheroes as they focused themselves solely on fairytales. But film producer Helene Plotkin was interested in stretching out beyond fairy tales, something that would soon become normal for Disney in the 1990s, but for now, it was something the studio feared. The last time they had branched away from fairy tales had led to some not-so-successful movies. But this was a new era and besides it being named the Renaissance era, it was also named the era of experimentation.

Even though the head of animation Don Bluth agreed to a superhero project, the question of which superhero they should try to work with was born. They couldn't turn to DC Comics because they had been bought by Warner Brothers in 1988. Because of this, Disney turned to rival Marvel comics, they could have gone it alone but Bluth wanted someone involved who had experience in comics. Marvel would in the 2000s become owned by Fox, but for now, it was its own company that had dabbled in movies but never truly gone anywhere with them. It was decided early on that instead of trying to adapt a superhero that existed, Disney would instead make its own with the help of Marvel. So, the creative team for the film was established. Helene Plotkin took on the role of producer alongside Ian Bryce, don Bluth passed on the directors’ chair due to commitments to The Sword in the Stone so instead Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise took the job. In terms of screenwriting, Marvel icon Steve Ditko (co-creator of Marvel superhero Spider-Man and creator of Doctor Strange) joined the team alongside Ted Elliott.

The studio had a team and had a general idea they wanted to make a superhero film, but the question now arose of exactly what the story would be since they had opted to make their own. For a time, they considered a film about a man who created a suit made of Steel to fight bad guys, but this was considered too close to both Iron Man and Steel who were existing characters in both Marvel and D.C. In the end, Disney’s precedence for family films gave the crew the biases of an idea. They would explore friendship and family and thus the name and plot were born. The Story Follows Robotics prodigy Thomas (Nathan Forrest Winters) who lives in the city of San Fransisco in the year 2077. Next to his older brother, Lewis, Thomas's closest companion is Baymax (Anthony Daniels), a robot whose sole purpose is to take care of people. When a devastating turn of events throws Thomas into the middle of a dangerous plot, he transforms Baymax and his other friends into a band of high-tech heroes.

There was an early idea of setting the film in Japan but that idea was squashed in favour of a futuristic San Francisco. Big Hero Six (as it was named) was one of the few Disney films in the 90s to not be scored by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. Instead, the film’s score was composed by J. A. C. Redford. The film was released in 1991 and, like other renaissance-based films at the time, was a hit, becoming the first Disney superhero movie the studio would release, though some worried that by deviating away from fairy tales again, the studio could be setting itself up for failure as it had before. Yet despite the success of the film, the production’s close association with Marvel meant that when Fox bought Marvel, Disney canned the planned sequel. For whatever reason, Disney wanted nothing to do with Big Hero Six with Marvel under another company. Some speculate that had Disney bought Marvel, Big Hero would have become its own superhero franchise, but the fate of the beloved film was one of obscurity created by studio feuds. Though Disney fully owns Big Hero Six, since that 1991 film, the universe that they hoped to be something big slowly faded from public view and well the film exists on DVD it has yet to be added to Disney+.

So this is TTL's Disney Renaissance? Interesting. Also, I wonder how different The Sword in the Stone will be once we get to that one

You know in the very far future, Cartoon Network and other cartoon channels are likely to get some form of chapter in whatever story comes after this one, it may not be Disney but i can put Amphibia on another channel.

I am determined to grow this universe beyond Disney now I have the hang of this somewhat. I am going to start trying to write chapters whenever I get ideas now and try to get a few of them done so I can return to one a day. To that end, I need to know what y'all want to see next after this so I know! To That end, voting is now open and will be open till the next chapter drops in the coming days.

Now certain timelines will of course be different. Warner Brothers would be akin to this one, looking from the perspective of the family and studio members as times change well others may be more a wiki-style look at the films through the years.
Between the options, I'm voting for Universal.

Okay folks, try voting again because during the time i logged into the voting thing, it fucked up the poll
the actual way it should be will allow you to order them instead of chose just one.
